It’s not about how much we do….It’s really about how much we get done

Most people focus on activities – write down everything that comes to mind that you need to do and then get to work doing it. This is being busy. Focus instead on accomplishing. Two approaches to time:

1. focus primarily on the results you want to achieve

2. focus on the activities you do

Psychologists tell us the key to successful living is having clear, specific goals. The reason more people are not successful is that they do not pursue specific goals. They simply shift from one activity to another without any focus or purpose. Changing the way you use your time requires you to set goals – about who you want to be and what you want to do.

“Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.”

~ Scott Peck

When you truly think about, you do know how to master your time – do the most important activities first. However, we do not or cannot always do what we had planned. Most of us will do the things we like to do. Or, find must interesting or satisfying. We have the habit of responding to urgent things first. We believe they must be done now – they will not wait. Urgent things usually have short-term consequences. Important tasks tend to have long-term consequences; their impact is noticeable for a long time.

We live in constant tension between the important and urgent. How we become time mis-users is believing everything we do is important. Even though it may be painful to admit it we spend much of our day engaged in relatively unimportant activities.

Time management really is self management. The way you spend your time defines your life!!! Identify non-productive habits, establish priorities and shift your thinking from time management to self-management. Learn how to spend your time doing what is most important to you!
